Fun Day

Couple of photos from a fun day of body surfing. I even broke the strap on my handplane. Pretty stoked because I can see how to make my straps stronger.

Handplane Demo Day Was A Success

The surf may have been small but that didn't stop anyone from having fun. There was a great turn out with lots of homemade crafts. Special thanks to Andrea and her family of Being Free, Harbour Surfboards, and The Canvas Shop Seal Beach for their help in making this event possible.

Make Your Own Handplane

Shane Bowman-Handplane from briankucera on Vimeo.

Video made by my friend Brian Kucera.

Handplane Demo Day- August 25th

Grab a pair a fins and get down to Anderson St. on Saturday August 25th for some handplaning fun. This is just a day for people to come down and try many different types of handplanes and enjoy the ocean. Leave the surfboards at home and bring your sense of humor. Any planing device is welcome. Fast food trays, cookie sheets, frisbees, pieces of your fence in the backyard...you name it. If it has a flat surface we want to see you riding it in the surf! The body womping starts at 8am and there will be coffee and donuts while you discuss the totally awesome time you had in the water. Contributors include: Harbour Surfboards, Canvas Shop Seal Beach, Jeff Beck of Nine Lights, Being Free, Recycled Stoke, myself, and many more.

See you There!

Put The Ruler Down!

This is an illustrated book I made for one of my final projects this semester. It is based on my adventures of strange or unfortunate incidents that have occurred while riding my bike to class all wrapped up into one day. The book is a little over twenty pages long. I made this book from start to finish: illustrating, writing, printing and binding.

Here are just a couple of spreads in the book.

Handplane in CSULB University Art Muesum "Insights 2012" Show

My final project from Wood shop made it into the annual University Art Museum "Insights 2012" art show at CSULB. Pretty cool to have a handplane amongst all this other awesome art!

The handplane is made from free bamboo plywood samples that I glued together and shaped. Then I soaked the bamboo in red wine for 24 hours to get the dark burgundy stain and sealed it with UV curing polyester resin.

4 More Hats

Four new hats for my Dad and his buddies. They spend a lot of time on the golf course so what better way to protect your dome from the socal sun than a hand painted trucker hat!?

New T-Shirt at Harbour Surfboards

Here is the newest t-shirt I designed for Harbour Surfboards. Inspired by our one of kind HP fin. The classic photo on the fin is team rider, Mark Martinson, bottom turning in Hawaii c.1960s. You can buy them online or stop by the shop on Main St. in Seal Beach.

Two Painting sold at Art of All Ages 2 Benefit-CCD

Last month I was part of the annual Art of All Ages 2 event at CCD- Comprehensive Child Development Center in Long Beach. The proceeds from the event went to CCD to help provide more classes and services for all the children. Well these are the two paintings that sold at the event. I am so happy that someone new gets to enjoy my art and the money went to a great cause.

Illustration projects from last semester

For this one I had to illustrate a poem and include a spot illustration with it. I chose to illustrate the poem "Lake Isle of Innisfree" by William Yeats:

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

(This was colored digitally using photoshop)
The assignment for this piece was to illustrate a word and incorporate the word into the image.

Recent Designs for Harbour Surfboards

Here are a couple t-shirts I designed for Harbour Surfboards in the past few months.

This one has been out for about a month now. Its an original ad from Surfer magazine in 1964. I just added color and tweaked it a little to make this groovy ad turn into a nostalgic shirt. Its available in store and at harboursurfshop.com for $23.95.
This design was hand drawn for last year's annual Harbour Surf Day held in November at Bolsa Chica. I was inspired by a photo I saw in the Harbour Chronicles Book of a VW bus and some Harbour team riders at Cautros Casas c.1960s. There was only a limited run of shirts for the event.

#12 and The Tray

I found a little spare time between school and work so I got to make a couple more handplanes. The diamond tail went to a friend of a friend. He used to own a Hand Gun back in the day and when he heard I was making handplanes he had to get one. Thanks for the support!

I am calling the one on the right "The Tray" because it is modeled after a fast food tray. It has a flat bottom, no concaves whatsoever, just a slight entry rocker and thats it. Its designed maximize planing surface for those smaller mushy days. I am excited to try it out. I mounted a Go Pro mount on it too so check back for some video clips and a review on how it works.
